The Gift of the Great Lakes to Bootleggers: Prohibition in the Heartland

Presenter: Jean Wilcox Hibben, PhD

During prohibition in the United States, a great many people obtained alcohol from Canada, then moved it to big cities in the US (Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, etc.). If your ancestor lived in those regions during the 1920s, there is a possibility that he/she was involved in obtaining booze (or maybe being a smuggler) using the system of the Great Lakes, a geographical gift for the rumrunners.
