Finding Lost Black Community History through Benevolent Societies

Many societies were part of the social fabric of African American communities from the Civil War into the 20th century. Dozens of organizations had a major impact in the community, providing avenues for health care, financial growth and political strength. These self-help groups thrived until the 1930's. The session will present methods of identifying ancestors who were part of these groups.
